If OISS is not helpful, I would suggest you check directly with the
Consulate General of Canada--maybe after thanksgiving... It probably
depends on what kind of visa you have. In the US it's legal to have an
expired F1 visa as long as our I-20 is valid. I'm not sure if you can do
the same in Canada with an expired visitor (temporary resident) visa. You
might get into trouble since you had to fill out a visa application form
detailing your travel plan, which probably didn't list that you'd stay
longer than the valid period...
