Examples of Education Expenses
You can deduct:
- Tuition
- Enrollment fees
- Expenses paid directly to the school as a condition of enrollment such as lab fees
- Books and course-related materials such as supplies and equipment (applies to American Opportunity credit if they are needed for the course of study)
- Any of the above expenses for the next semester as long as that semester begins within the first 3 months of 2022.
Include education expenses you paid using cash, checks, credit cards, loans, gifts, inheritances, savings account withdrawals, etc.
You can't deduct:
- Room and board
- Fees for courses involving sports, games or hobbies not part of a degree program
- Insurance
- Medical expenses including student health fees
- Transportation including mileage
- Fees for acquiring or maintaining a license (CPA, broker, teacher, etc.)
- Tutoring
- Tuition for private high schools or grade schools
- High school uniforms
- Undergraduate and graduate application fees
- Contributions to a student's Coverdell Education Savings Account
- Daycare expenses
- Homeschool expenses
