Dear international students and scholars:
Please accept best wishes from the staff of the Office for
International Students and Scholars (OISS) as the fall semester soon
comes to a close. We wish safe travels to all who journey to far off
places over the coming holiday break.
1) If you are leaving the U.S. for the break and will be returning as
an F-1 student or on F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT), please
remember to get a travel signature from our office. We recommend that
signatures are no older than 6 months upon your re-entry. Please click
here for more information on travel:
http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students_travel.php.
2) If you are graduating and have not yet applied for OPT, please note
that your OPT application needs to be received by immigration within
60 days of your completion date. More information about OPT can be
found at: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/employ.
3) F-1 students: When registering for classes, please note that U.S.
Immigration Regulations allow only ONE online class per semester that
can be used toward the minimum number of credits needed for full-time
enrollment as an F-1 student. Please make sure that you are in
compliance with these regulations. Failure to comply will affect and
possibly end your immigration status. More information is available
at: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/status/online.htm. Please contact
OISS if you have any questions.
4) Attention graduating students: If you earned any amount of money
through employment in the 2011 calendar year, you are still required
to file tax return forms with state and federal governments no later
than April 15, 2012, even if you return to your home country. The MSU
College of Law Tax Clinic can help you file your tax forms from
outside the US and their services are FREE. Avoid future legal
troubles – failure to file tax returns can impact you even after many
years have passed. Send an email to taxclinic@law.msu.edu as soon as
possible to make arrangements for filing your tax forms.
5) Let me also congratulate the winners of the 2011 annual
International Student Essay Contest:
1st Prize ($1,000): Fan Jiang from China
2nd Prize ($500): Kaliamma Ponnan from Malaysia
3rd Prize ($250): Basudeb Chakraborty from India
You can read their essays at:
http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/feature_essay_win.php. We are grateful to all
students who took the time to write their stories.
6) The extended deadline for submitting your application for the Homer
Higbee International Education Award is Friday, January 20, 2012.
Recipients will receive a cash award. For more information, please
visit: http://www.isp.msu.edu/awards/iac/forms/higbee.pdf.
7) Please join us this Friday for snacks and winter crafts at the last
Weekly Coffee Hour of the fall semester! It will take place from 4 to
6 PM in Spartan Rooms B and C at the International Center. Coffee Hour
will resume on Friday, January 13, 2012.
8) Follow our blog OISSLive to learn about special events, job
opportunities, and much more. As of late November 2011, OISSLive had
