If you're looking for a job and have decided to put your search on hold until
after the New Year, I've got one word for you: Don't.

"Based on my personal experiences during the past decade and a half, I can
tell you with confidence that the holiday months of November and December are
the best months for job hunting," says career coach Don Sutaria, president of
CareerQuest. (www.careerquestcentral.com).

Why? For one thing, most people believe there's no point in looking now--which
means there is less competition. But beyond that, companies are now firming up
their budgets for next year, and they may be looking for people to start in
January, perhaps even creating a new position if the right person (that would
be you) turns up. Indeed, Sutaria says he was hired in December, to start in
the new year, three separate times in 15 years (and they were all
"$100,000-plus" jobs, too).

What else makes this a great time to get out there and show your stuff?

"From Thanksgiving until New Year's Day, corporate America bathes in a special
glow," Sutaria says. "A holiday and shopping mood prevails. Executives with
the power to hire you generally travel less during this time of year, and
there is a greater mood of courtesy and charity. And managers may be a little
more relaxed and have more time to talk with you."

Another important seasonal advantage: parties. "These are the perfect
opportunity for networking," notes Sutaria. "Stay sober, and keep making
mini-pitches without becoming a bore. If you have friends working at other
companies, see if you can get yourself invited as a guest. I have done that,
and it works. The same principle holds true for parties given by friends and
neighbors. There is no harm in discreetly exchanging business cards at most
parties." Doing so may just get you what you really want from Santa: a great
new job.
